Remote Desktop from Windows to Ubuntu 24 Using NoMachine

Are you looking for remote desktop software for Ubuntu that can connect from Windows? Let me introduce you to NoMachine. It’s a cross-platform remote desktop tool, which means you can use NoMachine to connect between Linux, Windows, and macOS.

Download and Install NoMachine for Ubuntu 24

To download NoMachine go to www.nomachine.com. For Ubuntu 24 download the "Linux DEB amd64" package.

After installing NoMachine, you will find two shortcuts: 'NoMachine,' which is the main interface, and 'NoMachine Service,' which provides access to server settings (you can also access server settings from the main interface).

At startup, NoMachine will search for computers on your local network that also have NoMachine installed.

Server Settings

In the top left corner, you will find the button for Server Settings. In the bottom left corner, you will find a button to switch between shared and non-shared mode.

NoMachine Settings

In the Server Settings, under the Status tab, you will find the IP address and port you need to access your Ubuntu desktop from a remote computer.

In the Status tab, there is also a checkbox to control whether the server starts automatically when the system reboots.

The next setting, the ports setting, is where you can change NoMachine's port. The default is 4000, and we are not going to change it.

The next tab is the Security tab. This is where you configure most connection-related settings. By default, it's set to allow connections, and we're not going to change anything.

Connect to Ubuntu from a Windows PC

To start a remote desktop connection from Windows to Ubuntu, NoMachine also needs to be installed on the Windows PC.

From the Windows PC, first click the Add button and enter the information about the Ubuntu computer. Put the Ubuntu server's IP address in the 'Host' field.

Login Options

When you connect to the Ubuntu machine, you will see two login options: One is to log in using a system user on the remote machine, and the second option is to connect as a guest for desktop sharing.

  • Use the first option when you want to access your own computer remotely.
  • Use the second option when you want access to someone else's desktop for remote support. With this option, you don’t need a username or password, but a user on the other side will need to approve your request.

And one more thing, with NoMachine, you can copy and paste files between the local machine and the remote computer. Just drag and drop the files to the remote desktop.
